In 1991 my husband Bjarne and I started Brandenbjerg fold with 6 one year heifers without much knowledge of cattle. When we decided to buy cattle we attended a course on a farming school about having beef cattle.
I had been working with SAS Scandinavien Airline for 24 years and I usually tell that the difference between handling passengers and cattle is not that big, because as long as you feed them well they are satisfied!
Every year my husband and I travel to Scotland, mostly in October for the Show and Sale in Oban, where we enjoy looking at all the good Highlanders and meeting friends.
Our fold is now around 35 heads with 10- 12 cows. Our goal is Highlanders with a good temper and nice looking. I like to have all colours, so at the moment we have a black bull, and this year we have 6 black, 1 dun and 3 red calves. The oldest cow is Fussie who is one of our first ones, she is now 17 years, the two last years she has not had a calf, but we keep her anyhow, she is the queen of the fold all the others respect that.
The Danish Highland Cattle Society was founded in 1987 and has 250 members, there is around 5000 Highland Cattle in Denmark. www.highland-cattle.dk.
Since 1996 I have been the president and the editor of Newsletters and the Journal/Årsjournal, coordinator of judges for the shows, buying prizes for the winners, arranging tours to Scotland and much more. I have just been to Scotland with a group of 33 Highland members, I think it is important that so many as possible visit the homeland of the breed to keep the standard close to the original one.
