Canterbury Westland

The 5000th Animal listed in the NZHCS herdbook - Dalmally, a Canterbury born animal.

March 2013 Canterbury Westland report from Cynthia Christie
St Andrews Day Dinner was held at the end of November – location – Oxford. Unfortunately is was not that well supported and it was only by a concerted phone effort that we were able to get enough people together to continue. A lovely meal and general get together.

AGM Committee has been meeting regularly and organisation is progressing well. Some excellent ideas – the only thing they can't dial up will be the weather. some success with sponsorships thanks to the support of South Canterbury businesses. Committee is very keen to test run electronic mail outs etc with AGM info.

NZHCS SI Show had a successful day on the 23rd Feb. Glorious weather. The major hiccup was losing our Australian judge 10 days prior. He had an accident which precluded him from flying. Judy Smyth graciously stepped in to cover and the committee is grateful given the short notice, distance travelled and costs involved.

Nine exhibitors with 26 animals entered although not all animals made it on the day. Great to see Debbie Cruze travel all the way from Whakatane with her heifer.

Champion Highland: Celtic Rose of Pottidoon (2yr old Heifer) Reserve Champion : Sorbrach of Glenburn (cow over 3yrs with calf at foot). Celtic Rose was second in her “all breeds” class up against some fine entries form the larger beef breeds.

Thanks to everyone one on the show committee – they work hard to make the event special for Highland breeders.
Also to the sponsors of whom there are many.

The raffle will be drawn on the 17th March at the next committee meeting as unfortunately one of the raffle sheets was not returned in time for the 23rd.

Its dry – same as everywhere else, feed will be a priority going in to winter and decisions on what stock to give preferential treatment to need to be made. Anyone needing advice – please call.

Cynthia Christie
